ACR copper tube is specifically manufactured for refrigeration and air conditioning. Unlike plumbing copper, ACR tube is cleaned, dried, and sealed with nitrogen at the factory to prevent internal oxidation that could contaminate refrigerant systems. This is not a cosmetic difference — installing regular plumbing copper on a refrigerant system can introduce moisture and contaminants that cause compressor failure.

Pre-Made Line Sets

Pre-made line sets save installation time by providing a factory-assembled pair of copper tubes with pre-attached fittings, insulation, and often a communication wire. They are the standard for residential mini-split installations and increasingly used for light commercial systems.

What size copper pipe do I need for my AC?

For residential central AC (2-5 ton), the suction line is typically 3/4 or 7/8 inch OD and the liquid line is 3/8 inch OD. Mini-split systems use 1/4 inch liquid and 3/8 or 1/2 inch suction lines depending on capacity. Always follow the equipment manufacturer's specification — undersized piping causes excessive pressure drop, reducing system efficiency by 10-30%.

What is the difference between Type K, L, and M copper?

Type K has the thickest wall and is used for underground burial and high-pressure applications. Type L is the standard for above-ground HVAC refrigerant lines and hydronic heating. Type M has the thinnest wall and is primarily used for domestic water supply, not HVAC. Do HVAC copper pipes need insulation?

The suction (vapor) line must always be insulated to prevent condensation and maintain system efficiency. The liquid line insulation is recommended but not always required — it depends on the routing environment. In unconditioned spaces like attics, both lines should be insulated. Can I use PEX instead of copper for HVAC?

PEX cannot be used for refrigerant lines — it is not rated for the pressures (200-500 PSI) and temperatures involved. PEX is suitable for hydronic heating systems (radiant floor, baseboard) as an alternative to copper. For refrigerant applications, only copper (ACR grade) or approved aluminum alloy tubing should be used.
