1. How HVAC Diffusers Work
A diffuser converts a concentrated stream of air from a duct into a controlled, dispersed pattern that blends with room air. Without a diffuser, supply air would enter a room as a narrow jet, creating uncomfortable drafts near the outlet and leaving the rest of the room poorly conditioned.
The physics behind effective air diffusion involves two key principles. The Coanda effect causes a supply air jet to cling to an adjacent surface (typically the ceiling), extending its throw distance before the air drops into the occupied zone. This is why ceiling-mounted diffusers work so well — the air travels along the ceiling and gradually mixes downward. The second principle is entrainment: the supply air jet pulls surrounding room air into its flow, which speeds up mixing and temperature equalisation.
Effective diffuser selection means matching the airflow pattern, throw distance, and air volume to the room geometry. A 3 m × 4 m bedroom has very different needs from a 20 m × 30 m open-plan office, even if both are cooled to the same temperature.

2.1 Linear Slot Diffuser (2-Slot and 3-Slot)
Linear slot diffusers deliver supply air through one or more narrow slots, creating a thin curtain of air along the ceiling. The Coanda effect is strongest with this type, producing the longest throw distances of any ceiling diffuser — typically 4-6 metres (13-20 ft) from each side.
They are the go-to choice for architects who want invisible air distribution. When installed flush in a plasterboard ceiling or between T-bar panels, only a thin slot is visible. When to use: Open-plan offices, modern residential projects with flat ceilings, perimeter applications along windows, and any project where minimal visual intrusion is a priority. Not ideal for rooms under 2.4 m ceiling height — the jet does not have enough travel distance to properly entrain room air.
2.2 Square Lay-in Diffuser (2-Way and 4-Way)
Square lay-in diffusers drop directly into a 600 × 600 mm (24" × 24") suspended ceiling grid, making them the fastest to install of any diffuser type. Air exits through concentric rings or directional vanes in a 2-way or 4-way pattern. The 4-way pattern distributes air in all four directions equally; the 2-way pattern concentrates throw in two opposite directions, useful for long narrow spaces.

2.3 Bevelled Edge Diffuser (2-Way and 4-Way)
The bevelled edge diffuser is functionally identical to the square lay-in, but with an angled edge profile that creates a cleaner, more premium appearance. The bevelled border sits slightly below the ceiling plane, making it visually distinct from flat lay-in diffusers.

2.4 Round Ceiling Diffuser
Round ceiling diffusers use concentric rings or a cone to distribute air in a 360-degree radial pattern. They are compact, simple to install, and effective in small to medium rooms. ABS plastic construction keeps cost down while providing adequate performance for residential and light commercial use.
Our round ABS diffuser range is available in 4 neck sizes. The plastic construction makes them lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and suitable for wet areas like bathrooms and laundries.
When to use: Residential bedrooms, bathrooms, and utility rooms. Small commercial spaces like individual offices and consultation rooms. Wherever a compact, affordable diffuser is needed and the ceiling is plasterboard rather than T-bar.
2.5 Multi-Directional Outlet (MDO)
The multi-directional outlet is the most versatile ceiling diffuser. Its adjustable vanes can be set to 1-way, 2-way, 3-way, or 4-way airflow patterns on site, without removing the diffuser. This makes it ideal for spaces where the furniture layout or heat load may change after initial installation.
Our MDO system consists of a face plate (3 sizes) and a separate neck section (6 sizes from 150-350 mm). The two-piece design allows the face to be removed for cleaning while the neck remains connected to the plenum.
When to use: Flexible office spaces, co-working spaces, retail stores that change layout seasonally, and any room where the airflow direction may need to be adjusted after the HVAC system is commissioned.
2.6 Down Jet Diffuser
Down jet diffusers project air vertically downward in a concentrated cone. Unlike radial diffusers that spread air along the ceiling, down jets are designed for spaces with high ceilings (4 metres and above) where horizontal throw would never reach the occupied zone. The downward jet penetrates to floor level and then spreads outward.
Our down jet diffuser is available in 3 sizes with ABS construction. The adjustable cone allows throw distance to be tuned to the ceiling height.
When to use: Hotel lobbies, atriums, shopping malls, warehouses, gyms, and any space with ceilings above 4 metres. Not suitable for standard 2.4-2.7 m residential ceilings — the downward jet would create uncomfortable drafts at head height.
2.7 Double Deflection Wall Register
Wall registers are not technically diffusers, but they serve the same function for wall-mounted supply outlets. Double deflection registers have two sets of adjustable blades — horizontal and vertical — allowing precise directional control. The horizontal blades direct air upward (heating mode) or straight out (cooling mode), while the vertical blades spread or concentrate the pattern side to side.

When to use: Residential wall-mounted supply outlets, hotel rooms (below-window heating units), and any application where air needs to be directed away from the wall rather than spread radially.
2.8 Egg Crate Grille (Return Air)
Egg crate grilles are open-grid panels used primarily for return air openings. The grid pattern provides maximum free area (typically 80-85%) for low-resistance return airflow. They are not diffusers in the technical sense — they do not shape the airflow — but they are an essential part of the air distribution system that is often specified alongside supply diffusers.

3. Supply Grilles vs Diffusers — When to Use Which
The choice between a supply air grille (like a linear bar grille) and a diffuser depends on the required airflow pattern and the installation location.

Rule of thumb: Use diffusers for ceiling supply and grilles for wall/floor supply. In mixed systems (common in residential), the interior rooms get ceiling diffusers and the perimeter rooms get wall registers to counteract the heat loss/gain through exterior walls and windows.
4. Diffuser Sizing: CFM, Throw, and NC Rating
Three parameters determine the correct diffuser size: the required airflow volume (CFM or L/s), the desired throw distance, and the acceptable noise level.

Key sizing rule: Keep the face velocity below 2.5 m/s (500 FPM) for occupied spaces. Above this velocity, the airflow becomes audible and can create uncomfortable drafts. For libraries, recording studios, and sleeping areas, target face velocity below 1.5 m/s (300 FPM) for NC 25 or lower.
When in doubt, size up. A 250 mm diffuser operating at 150 CFM will be quieter and more comfortable than a 200 mm diffuser at the same airflow, because the larger face area reduces velocity. The cost difference between sizes is typically only 10-15%.

6. Installation and Plenum Connection
Most ceiling diffusers connect to the duct system through a plenum box — an insulated sheet metal enclosure that sits above the ceiling and provides a smooth transition from round duct to the diffuser face. Proper plenum selection is just as important as diffuser selection: a poorly designed plenum causes uneven air distribution across the diffuser face, creating noisy hot/cold spots.
Our plenum box catalog includes 110 SKUs covering every common configuration. Key rules for plenum installation:
Match the plenum neck to the duct size. A 250 mm duct needs a 250 mm neck plenum. Using a reducer between the duct and plenum adds unnecessary pressure drop and noise.
Use top-entry plenums when possible. Top entry produces the most even air distribution across the diffuser face. Side entry is acceptable when ceiling space is limited, but the air needs turning vanes inside the plenum to redirect flow.
Insulate the plenum. Uninsulated plenums above air-conditioned spaces cause condensation, which drips through the ceiling. Use R-6 (40mm) fiberglass-lined plenums for cooling systems. Non-insulated plenums are only acceptable for heating-only systems in dry climates.
Seal all joints. The plenum-to-diffuser connection and the plenum-to-duct connection must both be sealed with mastic or gasket to prevent air leakage above the ceiling.
