Registers: Grilles with Damper Control

A register is simply a grille with an integrated opposed-blade damper (OBD) behind the face. This damper — operated by a small lever or thumb wheel on the face — allows the end user to reduce or shut off airflow through that particular outlet without modifying the ductwork.

For residential and light commercial applications, registers are the standard supply air terminal because they give occupants individual room control. In a typical 3-bedroom home, each room has its own supply register that can be adjusted independently.

Key specification difference: When ordering registers, you must specify both the duct connection size AND whether you need a one-way or two-way damper. One-way registers direct air in a single plane (suitable for sidewall mounting); two-way registers spread air across the ceiling in both directions.

Diffusers: Engineered Air Distribution

Diffusers are engineered air distribution devices designed to spread conditioned air evenly across a room. Unlike grilles (which push air in one general direction), diffusers use internal vanes, cones, or plenum boxes to create specific airflow patterns — 2-way, 3-way, 4-way, or radial.
