Linear slot diffusers are the architect's favorite HVAC component — they deliver air invisibly through narrow slots that blend seamlessly with ceilings, soffits, and wall details. When done right, occupants feel comfortable air without seeing where it comes from. When done wrong, slots whistle, draft, or fail to condition the room.

Slot Configuration

Linear slot diffusers come in 1-slot, 2-slot, 3-slot, and 4-slot configurations. Each additional slot increases the airflow capacity per linear foot and the throw distance. The selection depends on the room's CFM requirement divided by the available diffuser length.

The Coanda Effect: Why Ceiling Integration Matters

The Coanda effect is the physical principle that makes linear slot diffusers work. When air exits the slot at velocity, it entrains surrounding air and creates a low-pressure zone between the jet and the ceiling. This pressure difference pulls the air jet against the ceiling, where it travels horizontally across the room rather than dropping straight down.

For the Coanda effect to work properly, the diffuser must be mounted flush with or recessed into the ceiling with the slot opening within 6 inches of the ceiling plane. A gap greater than 6 inches between the slot and the ceiling breaks the Coanda attachment and causes the air to dump vertically — creating cold drafts directly below the diffuser.

Sizing Example

A 20x30 foot office needs 600 CFM of supply air. The architect wants a linear slot diffuser along the 20-foot window wall for perimeter heating/cooling. Required CFM per foot: 600 / 20 = 30 CFM/ft. From the table: a 2-slot diffuser handles 30-50 CFM/ft — perfect for this application. The throw at 30 CFM/ft with a 2-slot is approximately 10-12 feet, which covers half the room depth (15 feet) — adequate with a ceiling return on the opposite wall.

Plenum Box Connection

Linear slot diffusers connect to the duct system through a plenum box mounted above the ceiling. The plenum box serves as a pressure equalization chamber — it converts the high-velocity, non-uniform airflow from the round duct connection into even, low-velocity airflow across the full length of the slot diffuser. When in doubt, upsize — a 3-slot diffuser at lower velocity is quieter and has better air distribution than a 2-slot at higher velocity.

What is the Coanda effect in slot diffusers?

The Coanda effect is the tendency of an air jet to cling to a nearby surface (the ceiling). When a linear slot diffuser is mounted flush with the ceiling, the supply air jet attaches to the ceiling surface and travels horizontally across the room rather than dropping straight down. This creates a wide, even distribution pattern with minimal drafts. The Coanda effect works best when the diffuser is mounted within 6 inches of a flat ceiling — recessed diffusers with a gap between the slot and the ceiling surface lose the Coanda effect and may cause drafts.

What throw distance can a linear slot diffuser achieve?

Throw distance depends on slot velocity and number of slots. At standard velocities (500-800 FPM), a 2-slot diffuser achieves 8-15 feet of effective throw, and a 3-slot diffuser achieves 12-20 feet. The 0.25 m/s (50 FPM) terminal velocity defines the end of the throw — beyond this point, the air speed is too low to provide effective mixing. For rooms wider than the diffuser throw, install diffusers on both sides or use a center-mounted diffuser with bidirectional throw.
